COURSE DETAILS

Week 1: Introduction to Watercolour & Materials

Get to know your materials (paper, brushes, pigments and texture mediums) through fun, accessible and atmospheric watercolour activities.

Week 2: Techniques

Learn fundamental watercolour techniques such as wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush using simple autumn-inspired 'land, sea, sky' compositions.

Week 3: Colour Theory and Mixing

Learn basic colour theory, how to mix colours, and how to create harmony. We'll use shells and stones from Cockenzie beach cove!

Week 4: Understanding Light and Shadow

Learn to depict light and shadow. We'll discuss how to find 'shadow-shapes' and look at a negative edge technique. We'll also look at basic composition and (how to play with) perspective, harmonise elements and create depth in your work.

Week 5: Blurring the Lines

Learn more advanced techniques to keep your work loose and atmospheric, such as softening and bleeding away edges. We'll use seasonal flowers, shrubs and birds/creatures as references.

Learn to work and adapt to the sporadic nature of watercolour and how to overcome challenges and self-doubt by leaning into a more mindful approach to creative practice.

Week 6: Texture Mediums, Inks & Adding Mixed Media Elements

Explore the options of adding exciting texture mediums, inks and other mixed media to your watercolour work to add interest and push your creativity further!

Weeks 7 & 8: Project Work

It's over to you (with plenty of support from Kat 😊). You will be encouraged to apply your new watercolour skills to your final project pieces. Get inspired by picturesque autumn scenes in Cockenzie, including the beach cove and harbour.

You may wish to work in an abstract/semi-abstract way. It's your time in the studio–anything goes!
