Watercolour Wonder: Loose Atmospheric Portraits

Step into the expressive world of watercolour portraiture in this brand-new 6-week course with artist Kat Healy, designed especially for those who’ve already dipped their brush into the magic of Watercolour Wonder at Shorelark.
✨ What to Expect
This relaxed and supportive course is perfect for building your confidence with portraits in a loose, intuitive style.
We’ll explore expressive ways to capture the essence of a face—playing with light, colour, and texture while letting go of perfectionism.
Over six weeks, you'll:
🖌️ Weeks 1–4: Foundations & How to Build a Playful Approach
- Study key facial features in monochrome to understand structure without the pressure of colour
- Learn how to mix skin tones and build a harmonious limited palette
- Experiment with atmospheric washes, textures, and playful mixed media to bring depth and interest to your portraits
- Use supportive techniques like the ‘gridding’ method to help with drawing (no need to be confident at sketching!)
🖌️ Weeks 5–6: Develop Your Unique Style
- Begin to create a small portfolio of your own portraits, exploring character and whimsy
- Plan and complete one or more finished portrait pieces, guided and supported every step of the way
- The final portraits (or prints) will be displayed in a community exhibition at The Cockenzie Hub 🖼️

- A PDF portrait guide full of tips and techniques for continuing at home
- Weekly practical prompts and exercises, shared via Shorelark Online, with optional group sharing and encouragement
- An A5 watercolour sketchbook to use throughout the course (notes/colour swatches/sketches etc.)
- All core studio materials provided – feel free to bring your own favourites too!
💛 Who It’s For
This course is open to all levels, but you must have attended a Watercolour Wonder Immersion Day to join. If you enjoyed that introduction and are ready to experiment with portrait work, this is for you.
No portrait drawing experience? No problem! You’ll be fully supported with simple, effective drawing techniques and a warm, inclusive studio environment.
Spaces are limited – book early to avoid disappointment.
